What Breaks, and Who Could Fix It
Cleaning is the highest-frequency operation in the fab, which makes it a throughput and chemical-consumption question as much as a technology one.
India makes wet process equipment for the solar and PCB industries. The step up to semiconductor cleanliness is real but is the shortest such step on this vertical.
Best and worst case
The most mechanically conventional major tool in a fab (fluid handling, rotation, drying) with several suppliers and no exotic physics.
Cleaning tools generate the fab’s largest chemical waste stream, and the effluent treatment behind them is a permitting exercise in its own right.
This is the one front-end tool category where an Indian engineering firm could plausibly build a credible product, starting from wet benches for less demanding applications.
Qualification into a leading fab is out of reach. A realistic first customer is a compound semiconductor or MEMS line, not Dholera.

- What it would plausibly cost an Indian MSME to enter this input at the smallest viable scale, in crore rupees. Plant and equipment only; it excludes working capital and the qualification cycle.
- Time to qualify
- How long from a working sample to a qualified first shipment, once the line exists. Qualification, not construction, is what usually decides whether an entry succeeds.
